We Take Care of the Medical Director and Supervision Requirements

One of the biggest challenges for Licensed Acupuncturists who want to treat Medicare patients is navigating Medicare's unique billing and supervision requirements.

That's where we come in.

Colorado Acupuncture Billing provides the qualified Medicare Medical Director and supervision infrastructure required for our program. Our Medical Director is familiar with acupuncture, maintains appropriate professional liability coverage, oversees the Medicare services provided through our program, and is available to our participating providers when needed.

For services requiring direct supervision, our program provides access to the supervising practitioner through real-time audio and video communication, consistent with current CMS requirements for virtual direct supervision.

We coordinate the Medical Director relationship, supervision procedures, Medicare billing infrastructure and administrative requirements so you don't have to build this complicated system on your own.

You remain the licensed acupuncturist treating your patient. We take care of the Medicare infrastructure behind you.

How does Medicare allow this?

Medicare does not currently recognize Licensed Acupuncturists as independent Medicare billing providers. However, CMS specifically allows appropriately qualified and licensed acupuncturists to furnish covered acupuncture as auxiliary personnel under the appropriate supervision of an eligible Medicare practitioner.

Qualified acupuncturists must meet applicable state requirements, hold the required acupuncture education, and maintain a current, full, active and unrestricted acupuncture license.

Start Without the Upfront Cost & Complexity

We've built the Medicare infrastructure so you don't have to.

Setting up a Medicare acupuncture program independently can require significant time, administrative work, billing expertise, and access to an appropriately qualified supervising practitioner.

Colorado Acupuncture Billing has already built that infrastructure.

There are no large upfront costs to establish your own Medicare billing system or Medical Director relationship through our program. We provide the Medical Director and supervision structure, eligibility verification, claims processing, patient billing, and ongoing administrative support.

Our compensation is tied to the Medicare services we successfully process through the program, which means our success is connected to yours.

You are still responsible for providing medically appropriate care, maintaining your professional licensure and insurance, and completing accurate, compliant documentation. We take responsibility for the Medicare billing and administrative services outlined in our agreement.

A simpler way to add Medicare to your practice.

You don't need to become a Medicare billing expert or build an entire administrative system before seeing your first eligible patient.

You provide the care. We provide the infrastructure.

There is a $99 annual Provider Enrollment & Compliance Fee. This covers your provider onboarding and annual compliance review, including verification of your active acupuncture license, professional liability insurance, and required provider documentation.

We Verify Medicare Eligibility & Benefits

Medicare can be confusing — for patients and providers. We take care of the verification process for you.

When you have a patient who may qualify for Medicare-covered acupuncture, simply send them our way. We gather the necessary demographic and insurance information and verify their Medicare eligibility, coverage information, and available acupuncture benefits.

We also determine whether Medicare is primary, identify applicable secondary or supplemental coverage when available, and review the patient's Medicare acupuncture benefit before treatment begins.

Medicare currently covers acupuncture specifically for qualifying chronic low back pain, beginning with up to 12 visits within 90 days. An additional 8 visits may be covered when the patient demonstrates improvement, for a maximum of 20 covered acupuncture treatments annually.

Once we've completed the verification, we communicate the patient's benefit information to both you and the patient, so everyone understands what to expect before treatment begins.

You identify the patient. We handle the Medicare details.

Expand Your Practice While Expanding Access to Care

Medicare can open your practice to an entirely new group of patients who may otherwise have limited access to acupuncture.

We've seen firsthand what can happen when patients learn that Medicare covers acupuncture for qualifying chronic low back pain.

Patients who may have avoided acupuncture because of the out-of-pocket cost can suddenly have access to consistent treatment.

And that consistency can benefit your practice, too.

Medicare reimbursement may be lower per treatment than your typical cash rate, but it's important to look beyond the value of a single visit.

An eligible patient may receive up to 12 covered visits within 90 days, with up to 8 additional visits when they demonstrate improvement, subject to Medicare's coverage requirements.

For a patient who otherwise may never have walked through your door—or who could only afford occasional treatment—that can mean a meaningful amount of medically necessary care over the course of the year.

For your practice, those visits can add up. For your patient, they can mean access to care they may not otherwise be able to afford.

We've experienced this growth in our own acupuncture clinics, but it doesn't happen automatically. Successful providers educate eligible patients about their Medicare acupuncture benefit and make covered care accessible when it is medically appropriate.

It's not just about reimbursement per visit. It's about the bigger picture.

  • More access for Medicare patients.

  • More consistent treatment when clinically appropriate.

  • A new patient population for your practice.

  • And an opportunity to help people who might otherwise go without acupuncture care.

  • That's a win for patients and for acupuncture practices.

We Handle Patient Billing & Payments

No need to calculate Medicare deductibles, collect coinsurance, or figure out what the patient owes. We handle that for you.

Colorado Acupuncture Billing manages the financial side of the patient's covered Medicare acupuncture care.

We process the claim, determine the patient's responsibility based on Medicare's adjudication, coordinate applicable secondary or supplemental insurance, and bill the patient for any remaining covered-service balance when appropriate.

If the patient has a Medicare deductible or coinsurance responsibility, we handle the billing and collection process directly with the patient so you don't have to manage it at your clinic.

Once the claim and applicable patient responsibility have been processed, we pay you according to your provider agreement.

You focus on treating the patient. We handle the Medicare billing, payments, and follow-up.
